Big Star’s Third Concert – “For You” (live)
Less a proper band than an event, Big Star’s Third Concert is a reimagining of the classic indie pop album by a group of artist that all share Big Star’s influence on their own sounds. Given the sad circumstances surrounding Alex Chilton’s death, days prior to a planned appearance at SXSW in 2010, this concert should hold special significance for both the performers and attendees. In addition to Big Star’s drummer Jody Stephens, the group is comprised of Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Mitch Easter (Let’s Active), Charles Cleaver (Max Indian), Chris Stamey and Will Rigby (the dB’s), members of Lost in the Trees, Tift Merritt, Matthew Sweet, Norman Blake (Teenage Fan Club), Ira Kaplan (Yo La Tengo), The Rosebuds and Fan Modine. This should be a well-attended event, so get in line early for this rare group performance.

Kramer could hear Leary and Haynes screaming at each other inside, and when he finally worked up the courage to open the door, he found the two of them smashing guitars, bottle and chairs in what Kramer calls “the most potent example of bad behavior I have ever seen. To this day, more than fifteen years later, I have no more vivid memory of the effect a life in music can have on a human being.”
Moments later a man entered the dressing room and asked if he could borrow a guitar. “BORROW A GUITAR??!!! WELL, WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU???!!! Haynes screamed, eyes flashing in delirious anticipation of forthcoming violence. But the man was totally unfazed.
“I’m Alex Chilton,” the man answered calmly.
Haynes was flabbergasted. After a long pause, he methodically opened the remaining guitar cases one by one and gestured at them as if to say, “Take anything you want.”

Massive Bereavement: Chris Bell
Probably the best song ever that features (what I assume to be) steel drums. Lyrically it is so, so depressing, but also absolutely amazing. Big Star are one of my favourite bands of all time, and I love this solo album I Am the Cosmos by Chris Bell. The song…
